MINDLESS arsonists have been slammed for damaging a children’s play area in Runcorn.

One fire engine from Runcorn Fire Station was dispatched to Stockham Lane yesterday evening following reports of a fire in Town Park.

On arrival at the scene at 7.52pm firefighters found that the fire involved playground equipment and rubber matting.

A hose reel jet was used to put out the fire, which was started using wheelie bins.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that it is liaising with Cheshire Police due to the deliberate nature of the incident.

The fire was condemned by the area’s Neighbourhood Watch coordinator, who said: “Mindless scumbags decided to set fire to children’s play equipment in Town Park in Runcorn.

“Families are strapped for cash and children need free activities to do.

“Somebody will know those that did this.”
