'Fire Hose' mentality drives UVA defense -

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) --There's a lot of eyes on the new UVA defense under coordinator John Rudzinski,  not just because of the bleak numbers UVA posted last year on the defensive side of the ball but because of the speed and complexity of Rudzinski's new scheme. T ony Elliott joked after the first scrimmage last week that it's seems like the defense has two full playbooks in use.

It's just one playbook Rudzinski has installed but it's an expansive one. Over the course of the spring and summer the defense has used what he calls a fire hose mentality, throwing  as many new concepts at the players as they can handle. Rudzinski says it's now time to start dwindling that down and seeing what works best.

"What we'll do is as a coaching staff, as we start to get ready for the season is be really retrospective as far as what have we done really well in spring ball and fall camp and then let that be our package," said Coach Rudzinski, "So that allows us to boil it down and uh ultimately try to put guys in positions where they're the fastest which can lead us to playing the best defensive football."

So how have they been able to put the pieces together and make it stick? They say it's about walking through their plays every single day and spending lots of time in the play book. In other words, it's all about focusing on the basics and making it as simple as possible.

"Whenever you learn a new place book especially in the college sense it's like oh this is a lot," explained Langston Long, sophomore defensive back, "Even still there's so many checks and other thoughts it's a lot but the way they break it down, the way Coach Cox the way Coach Rud breaks it down, it just makes it small bite size pieces, you can eat it off a smorgeous board and they're making it palatable for all of us."

"We install everyday but I think they simplify it to where it's not hard for us to understand, understand the concept, the why, to why the defense and then whenever we go and apply it to the field it's simple," said Chico Bennett Jr. senior defensive end.
