SALEM, Ore. -- The State of Oregon is extending an air quality advisory to Lake County today.

Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) issued the extension today to an existing air quality advisory for northern Klamath, Douglas, Clackamas, Lane, Multnomah and Washington counties to include Lake and Deschutes counties, too.

DEQ says wildfire smoke from the Cedar Creek Fire and fires in Washing are causing the updated and extended air quality advisory to Friday, October 14, 2022.

DEQ says because smoke levels can change rapidly depending on weather, people can check smoke conditions at the Oregon Smoke Information Blog , DEQ’s Air Quality Index , and by downloading the free OregonAIR app  for smartphones.

DEQ reminds that, "Smoke can irritate the eyes and lungs and worsen some medical conditions. People most at risk include infants and young children, people with heart or lung disease, older adults and pregnant people.  Protect yourself and your family when smoke levels are high:

DEQ advises that cloth, dust and surgical masks don’t protect from smoke particles which need N95 or P100 respirators approved by NIOSH  that might offer protection if properly selected and worn.  It suggests that people select NIOSH-approved respirators with a N, R or P alongside the number 95, 99 or 100.  People can learn how to put on and use a respirator  online.  DEQ reminds that respirators won’t work for children as they don’t come in children’s sizes and, "People with heart or lung conditions should consult their health care provider before wearing a respirator."

DEQ says people can find a cleaner air space at 211.org  to search for "Wildfire Related Clean Air Shelters" or call 211 any time or day.
