Firefighters tackled a large blaze at an industrial unit, part of which was evacuated today.

Residents in Tamworth, Staffordshire, were urged to "avoid the area" as the fire roared through the building at Riverside Industrial Estate. 

The building was evacuated as crews in eight fire appliances tackled the inferno.

No one is thought to be injured, Birmingham Live reports.

Photographs show thick grey smoke billow from the business premises.

"We currently have eight fire appliances from Staffordshire and Warwickshire, and our aerial ladder platform from Longton, at a fire in the Fazeley area, Tamworth. Please avoid the area," Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted this morning.

A spokesman since confirmed: "Firefighters are currently in attendance at a large fire at a business premises in Tamworth.

"Crews were called at 10.25am this morning (Wednesday 5 October) following reports of a machinery fire at a unit within Riverside Industrial Estate, off Atherstone Street in Fazeley. The building has been evacuated and no one has been reported injured.

"Firefighters from Tamworth, Lichfield, Burton-upon-Trent, Barton-under-Needwood and Chase Terrace remain at the scene. Colleagues from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service are also in attendance.

"Crews are using breathing apparatus, main jets, hose reel jets and the aerial ladder platform to tackle the fire.

"Nearby residents are being advised to close their windows and doors. Officers from Staffordshire Police are assisting with a number of road closures in the surrounding area and motorists are asked to follow the diversions in place.

"We thank you for your patience and understanding at this time."

Writing online, residents shared their concern.

One man said: "I hope everyone got out OK."

Another Facebook user posted: "That's awful, it doesn't look good. I hope everyone is safe."
