PROVIDENCE, RI (AP) – A man in New York who ran a program where he sold $ 20 million worth of counterfeit Chinese clothing and equipment to the U.S. military – potentially endangering members of the active service – has been sentenced to more than three years in prison, they said federal prosecutors.
Ramin Kohanbash, 52, was one of three people who played a role in a scam in which samples of original military clothing, including labels showing the trademarks of 15 companies manufacturing products for the U.S. Army, were delivered to manufacturers in China. a statement from the Providence Attorney’s Office.
Chinese producers were counterfeiting clothes that were shipped to Kohanbash for distribution to suppliers who sold them to the US government as American-made, authorities said. United States law requires uniforms and equipment sold to the Department of Defense to be manufactured in the United States or certain other designated countries. China is not among them.
“American soldiers and women risk their lives every day to defend the nation,” said US Rhode Island prosecutor Zachary Cunha. “But the risks they face should never come from the uniforms they wear and the equipment they wear. In this case, the actions of the defendants did exactly that, replacing American products with counterfeit products from abroad. “

Prosecutors said some of the equipment did not have essential safety features or did not meet safety specifications. This included over 13,000 counterfeit jackets that were supposed to be made of material that made them difficult to detect with night vision goggles, but were not; and over 18,000 hoods falsely labeled as fireproof, authorities said.
“Delivering counterfeit products to the Department of Defense endangers the lives of US officials and betrays public confidence,” said Patrick J. Hegarty, special agent in charge of the Department of Defense Northeast Bureau of Investigation.
Kohanbash pleaded guilty in 2019 to conspiracy to commit fraud and trade in counterfeit goods.
Kohanbash of Brooklyn, in addition to a three-year and four-month imprisonment, received an order in the US Providence District Court Wednesday to pay compensation to US companies, including a Rhode Island company, which reported a loss of more than $ 639,000 in profit.
Two other men involved in the plan also pleaded guilty. Bernard Klein, 41, from Brooklyn, was sentenced in April 2021 to 18 months in prison. Terry Roe, 49, of Burlington, North Dakota, pleaded guilty in February and is facing a sentence this month.
